Muqarnas are 3-dimensional projections of 2-dimensional designs. Thus what is a rigid pattern to an eye aligned directly beneath the composition becomes a fluid, ever-changing relief with realtime variables of elevation, position, and natural light. They are one of the more distinctive features of later Islamic art.
